Short Bio
  • After completing my PhD and Post Doctorial work, I went to work for MOBAY Agricultural Division as a pesticide analytical chemist. During my tenure at MOBAY, I performed material accountabilities (MAs), which is a FIFRA requirement for certification/recertification of a pesticide. These MAs identified and quantified all trace chemicals in a pesticide down to 0.1 %. This data was also used to defend the company against lawsuits. I was proficient with compliance with 40 CFR 160 FIFRA GLP and worked routinely with GC, GCMS, HPLC, IR and standard wet chemical methods. The major analytical methods I used in the FIFRA work were EPA pesticide methods, AOAC and FDA-PAM.

  • I have worked as a contract chemist helping laboratories maintain certification under CLP for RCRA and SARA/CERCLA projects. I analyzed data from cleanup sites and provided laboratory guidance to prevent data falsification. I worked routinely with GC, GCMS, AA and standard wet chemical methods. The major analytical methods used in the RCRA-SARA/CERCLA work were EPA-SW 846 and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.

  • I then worked for the Indiana State Chemist office as the pesticide residue laboratory manager. In that office I also had Indiana FIFRA inspector and Region 5 EPA inspector credentials. All work done under my supervision was to support civil and criminal FIFRA investigations in Indiana and West Virginia.

  • I have been a manager in two different wastewater laboratories in Iowa and a drinking water/surface water laboratory in New Mexico. In these laboratories I worked under the 40 CFR 136, 40 CFR 141 and 40 CFR 503 regulations and under the 40 CFR 403 regulations for a municipal pretreatment program. During this time frame, I have successfully brought two municipal laboratories through state certification and have trained laboratory staff on classical wet chemistry, AA, ICP, GC, HPLC, Ion chromatography, and other test methods as required under the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act. The major analytical methods I used in these positions are EPA water and wastewater  methods, Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, and ASTM.

I have served as the chair of the Laboratory Practices Committee for the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association and sit on that committee at this time; I am currently the chair of the AWWA-Iowa Section Laboratory Practices Committee and I am the vice chair of the AWWA Water Quality Laboratory Committee.

  • I have previously been a committee member of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater for 15 years and the Part Coordinator for Part 4000 for 11 years.

  • Recent awards include the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association Laboratory Analyst award; the IOWATER Professional of the Year (Watershed Testing); the Iowa Governors Award for Volunteerism (Watershed Testing); and the Water Environment Federation, Arthur Sidney Bedell Award for Service to the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association.
